A most usual collection of early twentieth century original English carols and carol arrangements by Peter Warlock, Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams, sung by the excellent mixed Choir of Christ’s College, Cambridge, directed by David Rowland. This is the choir’s eighth recording on the Regent label.
The recording includes a selection of nine well-known carols by Warlock, a set of four lesser-known carol arrangements and the ever-popular ‘Lully my liking’ by Holst.
Of particular interest is the first recording of the choral version of Vaughan Williams’s 1919 set of Eight English Traditional Carols. Apart from ‘This is the truth sent from above’, this wonderful set of carols is virtually unknown to choirs today, and contains Vaughan Williams’s imaginative and colourful arrangements of tunes that have become known through the work of later arrangers, including ‘The Sussex Carol’ (On Christmas night), ‘Down in yon forest’, and ‘Wassail Song’.
