This second Naxos issue of the cycle of 11 numbered and 6 unnumbered symphonies features the largest and most ambitious of the early “symphonies”, the turbulent and at times macabre Symphony of Silence and Death.
At the heart of Symphony No.1, ‘in Four Movements like the Four Seasons’, is the autumnal third movement, rich in radiantly melancholy sonorities. Symphony No.2 “elegiaca” is notable for the plaintive beauty of its two slow movements, especially the exquisite closing pages of the second, which also conclude the work.
“Based on this first volume of Symphonies, I believe that listeners will be pleasantly surprised at what appears to be a great symphonic cycle that is just waiting to be (re)discovered…. the playing by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and their conductor Antonio de Almeida is stimulating. To my mind, they are great advocates of Malipiero’s music. The programme notes by John C.G. Waterhouse are informative, well written and essential reading.” - MusicWeb International on Volume 1
