Alexis Weissenberg’s spectacular technique and individual way of playing have made a lasting impression on twentieth-century pianism. In certain areas of the piano repertoire some would say he is unsurpassed. His recordings of the Prokofiev 3rd Sonata, Scriabin Nocturne for Left Hand, Stravinsky Petrushka, and Rachmaninov Preludes are often cited as top recommendations.
On the stage he has a commanding presence, and never uses theatrics or other nonmusical gestures to deliver his message.
With a personality as strong as Weissenberg’s, there are bound to be detractors (he has had more than his fair share of criticism), but he has always stood steadfastly behind his musical convictions and never wavered from the course he set for himself.
The Petrouchka directed by Ake Falck needs special attention: for this famous film, 2 entire weeks of shooting were necessary as well as a special piano conceived and constructed for this occasion to fit the film director’s ideas!
And this film had a very strong impact on Weissenberg’s career: when Herbert von Karajan saw it, he immediately invited Weissenberg to play regularly with the Berlin Philharmonic.
Bonus: Alexis Weissenberg talks about Petrushka.
