Tuomas PirilaAbout
He studied with Paavo Heininen, Eero Hämeeniemi and Einojuhani Rautavaara at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki; since 1993 he has been lecturer in composition and the theory of music in the Department of Musicology of the Helsinki University.
This is the first recording of two symphonies hot off the press: No.1 was composed in 2003 and No.2 only in 2007.
They show the influence of the ‘spectral’ school of composers in Paris – who derive harmonies from the overtone series – and are characterised by a concern for colour and richness of texture. But they also have the sense of shape and direction and energy typical of the Sibelius symphonies, an influence of which Vuori was aware.
This is the first commercial release by the Hyvinkää Orchestra (based in Hyvinkää, 50 km north of Helsinki) and its chief conductor, Tuomas Pirilä, and marks Pirilä’s twenty years with the Orchestra.
The CD also contains an introduction to Vuori by Finnish-music expert Martin Anderson and booklet essays by both the composer and the conductor.
‘I have identified a factor which not only these two works but all of my more recent works share: the reconciliation of opposing worlds. This correlates somehow with my own life: analytical Modernism blended with intuitive Romanticism, a scientific world-view combined with a magical one, and so on. I have found such apparent conflicts to be fruitful both as a basis for creative processes and as an approach to life itself.’ Harri Vuori
