This live recording of Joseph Haydn’s “Seven Last Words” is a particularly impressive example of their art as a quartet: one brief hour of deeply moving music that filled the Herderkirche in Weimar and drew its listeners into meditation on the Passion of Jesus. This has captured something that cannot be attained in the studio, a moment of exaltation, experienced as such by the ensemble themselves.
