Marc Blitzen’s English adaptation of the book and lyrics relocated this 1920s Berlin stage piece to 19th Century London and in doing so created the runaway 1954 smash hit of New York, to this day the longest running Off-Broadway show, closing in December 1961.
The musicals themes of corruption and poverty remain endlessly relevant and have allowed the piece to be continually revived to comment on society for the past 50 years, and thus maintain its status as a modern masterpiece.
Featuring the classic tracks ‘The Ballad of Mack The Knife’ and ‘Pirate Jenny’, performed by the original off-Broadway cast including Scott Merrill, Martin Wolfson, Jo Sullivan and Lotte Lenya, this recording preserves a stand out moment of musical history, and a version of part of our musical future.
