About

Nino Rota was born in Milan in 1911. He was the son of a pianist and was seen as a child prodigy, writing his first works at the age of eight. He studied composition and conducting with the help and advice of the great Arturo Toscanini at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia between 1931 and 1932. During this time he discovered Hollywood films and the music of Gershwin. Back in Italy, Nino Rota turned his attention to writing film music but he also continued to compose for concert halls and opera houses with notable success.

Although Rota had a normal career as a "classical" composer throughout his life with a musical style that was deeply traditional, his international renown was mainly based on his composition of film music. His writing is particularly linked with the films of the great Italian director Federico Fellini, who used Rota’s music exclusively in his films throughout his career until Rota died in 1979. However he is probably known to most for his unforgettable scores for the “Godfather” trilogy.

The pieces featured on this new disc cover his music for viola and piano, and violin and piano, and as ever with this particular composer the works in question are always deeply lyrical. They are also extremely pictorial in their content, (a reflection of a lifetime spent in creating a sound world for the cinema).
