Timothy ParsonsAbout
The major church seasons and festivals are represented - Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, The Annunciation, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, Trinity, Harvest, Remembrance, St Edmund, and Christ the King - in a selection of both well-known and new anthems.
The choir regularly commissions new music, and recent composers have included Philip Moore, Mark Blatchly, Ghislaine Reece-Trapp and Edward Picton-Turbervill. Three of these new works – together with a new piece by Timothy Parsons – are recorded here for the first time here.
The Choir sings for the majority of the cathedral’s services. Its forty Choristers, aged approximately 7 to 14, are drawn from a wide range of schools in and around Bury St Edmunds. The altos, tenors and basses consist of six professional Vicars Choral, a Choral Scholar, and volunteer Lay Clerks. In addition to singing for the regular services, the Cathedral Choir performs regularly in concert, broadcasts live on BBC Radio 3, and has recently toured to Germany and France.
Timothy Parsons was appointed Director of Music at St Edmundsbury in 2021, and has revived the choir to new heights following the complete shutdown during the pandemic. At the time of release of this CD it had recently been announced that he is to move to Wells Cathedral as its new Director of Music in September 2024.
