In the output of the aforementioned composers, those cycles are not so much a showcase of their style as a curiosity - Schaeffer's youthful Sonatina is particularly surprising, but so is Bacewicz's sonoristic impression. In turn, the most familiar Bucolics are one of Lutosławski's few compositions for piano. The same is true of Panufnik's cycle of etudes - both preferred to express themselves through an orchestra.
Most of the pieces featured on the album did not become popular at the time of their creation, mainly due to the complicated relationship between art and politics in the first post-war decade. It is even more interesting to discover them through the prism of the later oeuvre of the big five Polish composers.
The CD is definitely a treat for lovers of contemporary harmonies and countless piano tone colours.
