About

This ‘live’ double album commemorates the 40th anniversary of Sir Adrian Boult’s death in 1983 and the condctor’s final public concert in 1977 – a superb account of Vaughan Williams’s Sinfonia antartica. Boult premiered The Planets, Hammersmith and The Banks of Green Willow, while the performances presented here of Sinfonia antartica, A Fugal Overture and Hammersmith are released on CD for the first time, coupled with thrilling interpretations of Walton’s Symphony no.1 and The Planets, both receiving state-of-the-art remastering.

Sir Adrian Boult (1889–1983) was probably Britain’s most authoritative interpreter of the music of Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. He formed close relationships with both composers, particularly with Vaughan Williams, giving premieres of three of his symphonies.
