About

This CD features two orchestra masterpieces by Rachmaninov in their first recordings. The Symphony no.3 and The Bells were made from live broadcasts made in 1937 by Sir Thomas Beecham and Sir Henry Wood respectively. Not only are these the first recordings of these two full-scale works, they are the only recordings of Rachmaninov ever made by either conductor.

In his prime when he made this British premiere recording with the LPO, Beecham gives a luscious account of Rachmaninov’s third and final symphony.

Rachmaninov’s choral symphony The Bells is based on Edgar Allen Poe’s haunting poem and was a personal favourite work by the composer himself. Wood’s stirring performance with the BBC Symphony features three notable British singers: Isobel Baillie, Parry Jones, and Roy Henderson.
