About

(Un)Discovered presents world-premiere recordings of the songs of Mieczysław Weinberg, performed here by Aleksandra Kubas-Kruk (soprano), Anna Bernacka (mezzo-soprano) and Monika Kruk (piano).

In recent years, works of Mieczysław Weinberg have been increasingly popular among both performers and audiences around the world. Until recently, the Polish composer's output has been associated mainly with numerous symphonies and chamber works, as well as with the opera The Passenger. This album, devoted entirely to songs for voice and piano, reveals a slightly lesser-known side to the composer.

The six songs which make up Acacias, op.4, are all set to texts around the theme of love, and the cycle itself is provided with the dedication 'dedicated to Her'.

The Gypsy Bible, op.57, is strongly inspired by Jewish culture as well as by folk music.

All the songs within Memories, op.62, are dominated by ubiquitous pessimism and nostalgia, and unlike the previous works, Wienberg reaches for the grotesque.

The songs included in the cycle Old Letters, op.77, are much more complex than the previous cycles: the piano accompaniment performs a number of different functions – ranging from classic onomatopoeia to inserts and connection passages – making selected pieces look like vocal and instrumental ballads.
