About

Heritage presents the 8th, 9th, 22nd and 24th Symphonies in its ongoing series of archival recordings of Havergal Brian, under the baton of Myer Fredman. The audio has been taken from the original BBC master tapes which have been sensitively re-mastered. Fredman had a particular affinity with the music of Havergal Brian and these performances from the 1970s provide ample evidence. The recording of the Ninth Symphony is the only recording currently available in the catalogue. Erudite and informative notes are provided by Brian authority, John Pickard.

The conductor Myer Fredman had a distinguished international career. Born in Plymouth, UK in 1932 (Fredman and Havergal Brian shared the same birthday of 29 January), he studied first at Dartington Hall, then in London with Peter Gellhorn, Vilém Tauský and Sir Adrian Boult. Between 1959 and 1974 he worked at Glyndebourne, conducting both at the Glyndebourne Festival and with the newly formed Glyndebourne Touring Opera. In the mid-1970s Fredman moved to Australia to work first with the State Opera of South Australia and then with Opera Australia. In later years, he lived in Hobart, Tasmania, where he taught at the Conservatorium of Music of the University of Tasmania. He died in 2014, aged 82.
