This is the culmination of Boris Giltburg’s Beethoven piano concertos cycle. Concertos no.1 and no.2 can be heard on 8574151: ‘This may just be Giltburg’s best recorded effort to date… The performances here of the First and Second Concertos are too good not to be part of an integral cycle’ (Fanfare).
‘Brilliantly partnered by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic under Vasily Petrenko’ (International Piano), Giltburg’s performance in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no.5 ‘Emperor’ and no.0 also received acclaim: ‘Boris Giltburg gives a fine account of the ‘Emperor’ Concerto which honours Beethoven’s markings plus the many additional traditions of rubato and tempo modification accumulated in the work’s performance history’ (BBC Music Magazine).
A grand 9-disc boxed set containing Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas is also available on 8509005: ‘Boris Giltburg’s complete cycle for Naxos must be reckoned among the best in recent years, with no holds barred and some strikingly original interpretative ideas … Giltburg has the full musical measure of whatever sonata is to hand. Certainly one of the most imaginative versions of ‘the 32’ to come my way in quite some while’ (Gramophone).
With the same orchestra and conductor Giltburg has recorded both Shostakovich concertos and Giltburg’s own arrangement of the String Quartet no.8 on 8573666, winning a Diapason d’Or: ‘Petrenko matches Giltburg’s dashing virtuosity and subtlety’ (BBC Music Magazine).
Pianist Boris Giltburg is lauded across the globe as a deeply sensitive, insightful and compelling musician. In 2020 he recorded on audio and audiovisual all 32 Beethoven sonatas, released in a box set in 2021. The first volume in his complete Rachmaninov concerto recordings series, coupled with the Études-Tableaux and subsequently the Corelli Variations and performed with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Carlos Miguel Prieto, won the award for Best Solo Recording at the inaugural Opus Klassik Awards, and his recital discs of Rachmaninov, Liszt and Schumann have been similarly well received.
