About

Nine world-première recordings on this double release with original works and arrangements for violin and piano by Eugène Ysaÿe; the most important performer and composer for the development of modern violin technique. These works have been rediscovered and reconstructed from manuscripts and sketches by the Norwegian violinist and musicologist Tor Johan Bøen.

The release of these ‘new’ Ysaÿe works – on CD and in critical editions – is a major event in the international world of music. The story behind the works, composed 1881–c.1926 and unknown for so long, is fascinating and typical of Ysaÿe.

Eugène Ysaÿe (1858–1931) was the most important violinist of his time, and a part of the violinist/composer tradition that started with Corelli. Ysaÿe first toured Norway in the spring of 1882. The tour visited the towns along the Norwegian coast from Trondheim to Fredrikstad. Ysaÿe played with the two Norwegian pianists Erika Lie Nissen and Karen Ølstad. During his concert tour in Norway in 1882 Ysaÿe composed three works for violin and piano: Légende norvégienne, Mazurka de concert, op.1, and Grande Valse de concert, op.3.

Reviews

Scènes Sentimentales: No. 5, a genuine charmer that moves from palm tree and antimacassar to foreground some virile extroversion. It’s played splendidly here. […] even Ysaÿe collectors will find things new to them in the stylish recital in which pianist Eirik Haug Stømner plays his full part.
