About

Matthias Goerne, one of the most high-profile Schubertians of his generation, has recorded a selection of Schubert’s songs not in their original versions with piano but in orchestral arrangements by Alexander Schmalcz, his accompanist of many years’ standing. Goerne says of Schmalcz’s work: “His creativity in adapting these songs for the orchestra is enormous, while his stylistic sensibilities and his subtle approach in deploying the right instruments at the right moment are truly astonishing.” Schmalcz explains that his goal was “to be as true to the original as possible” and that what we hear on the album is “pure Schubert”.

Reviews

Given Goerne’s vocal timbre, it’s no surprise that slow, sombre songs, usually in the minor key, predominate. But his trademark concentration of feeling, allied to Schmalcz’s subtly changing colourings, ensures that the attention is held throughout. ... a flawlessly executed programme that by turns intrigues, moves and delights.  Richard Wigmore
