About

After the critical success of the first volume of Beethoven’s symphonies, Jordi Savall now offers us from the Sixth to the Ninth. This latest publication crowns a nearly two-year world tour and confirms the extent to which the director renews our vision of these most famous works. The Concert des Nations shows that it also knows how to magnify the repertoire of the early 19th century, which will be confirmed by a forthcoming Schubert album.

“In extremely elaborate readings, of great sound beauty, Jordi Savall gives us a captivating start to this cycle” – Christophe Huss

Reviews

There’s a gritty Sturm und Drang quality to the opening of the Seventh and I like the way Savall keeps the Allegretto moving yet still retains its nobility. The punchy Allegro con brio finale is hardly Wagner’s ‘apotheosis of the dance’ but is instead full of vigour and it really stings, taken at the same tempo as Norrington and John Eliot Gardiner, but the playing feels more alive, more vital. ... There is genuine elation in the ‘Ode to Joy’, aided by the thrusting young chorus La Capella Nacional de Catalunya... Savall’s may well have just become my favourite period-instrument Beethoven cycle of them all.  Mark Pullinger (Recording of the Month)
