Mariss Jansons

About

Mariss Jansons was one of the most important conductors of our time, celebrated worldwide and held in the highest regard – all the more so since his unexpected death on 1 December 2019. “Mariss Jansons - The Edition”, comprising 70 recordings in a box set in representative LP format, documents the final phase of his life and career – his work as chief conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and the Bavarian Radio Chorus between 2003 and 2019. Predominantly live recordings from Munich, Tokyo, Vienna, New York, Waldsassen and the Vatican enable listeners to experience for themselves musical highlights that are as moving as they are exciting. The 57 CDs (15 works of which are being released for the first time on CD), 11 SACDs and 2 DVDs contain a remarkably diverse repertoire, ranging from symphonic music and great choral works to opera, and from the First Viennese School to 20th century classical music. “Mariss Jansons – The Edition” contains works by a broad range of composers – including complete cycles of the symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler respectively. It is supplemented by fascinating rehearsal recordings that bear witness to Jansons’s trusting artistic collaboration with the musicians in his orchestra, together with a large-format, approx. 72-page-long booklet containing background information, essays, an interview and a detailed track listing.

Mariss Jansons was held in high esteem by the musicians of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks – more, perhaps, than any other conductor. He was loved by his Munich audience, and adored by fans in international concert halls from Tokyo to New York.

Slipcase in LP format with 4 sections for the discs. The mini LP sleeves all have the original covers on the front. On top there is a 72-page booklet in LP format.

The booklet includes, for example, the laudatory speech by Thomas Hampson at the award ceremony for the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 2013, introductory texts, an interview “Der Taktstock”, artist biographies in English and German, extensive visual material and a detailed track listing, also containing several explanatory texts on the recordings and on Mariss Janson’s relationship to the works.

The following productions are new:
- Bruckner: Mass no.3
- Mahler: Symphonies nos 3, 4, 6 & 8
- Mozart: Requiem
- Pärt: Berlin Mass & Poulenc: Stabat mater
- Shostakovich: Concerto for Piano & Trumpet and Symphony no.9
First on CD (digital only before):
- Tchaikovsky: Romeo & Juliet, Stravinsky: The Firebird and Varèse: Amerique

Conductors in Rehearsal: 3 CDs
Mariss Jansons’s instructions in German, including his opening speech at the first rehearsal with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks: e.g. Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, and rehearsals for the concerts on 23 and October 2003 at the Philharmonie im Gasteig, Munich. One can experience first-hand how Mariss Jansons’s wishes and instructions are implemented, how his explanations and his temperament change the resulting sound, and what concepts lie behind the interpretation of the work. With this recording, the special collaboration between Mariss Jansons and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks has been successfully documented.
