Peter Caws (reciter)The Parkington Sisters
About
The Book of Hylas is a collection of eight short meditations written by Peter Caws, University Professor of Philosophy Emeritus, in residence with the University Honors Program at The George Washington University, and father of Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws.
Matthew connected Peter with The Parkington Sisters, a trio from Wellfleet, Massachusetts, who have previously toured with Mavis Staples and Bruce Springsteen.
The trio wrote a series of strings arrangements for the meditations over which Peter recites them. In his introduction to the collection, Matthew writes of coming across the meditations after his father mailed them to him years earlier: “Here was life and how to live in it explained in a new way, here was practical assessment.
“But here also was the echo of something ancient, a wonder at the world that felt primal, a timeless quality in the language, as if some of the same impulses that fed classic religious texts were at work, but free of dogma or ideas of power and punishment.”
