About

This, the final release in the complete Beethoven Violin Sonatas, from James Ehnes and Andrew Armstrong, will be eagerly awaited by their fans. The earlier albums (nos. 9 ‘Kreutzer’ & 6) and (nos. 1-3, Variations WoO40) received outstanding reviews. Gramophone said of the latter, “With some discs, you can just tell that everything’s going to go like a dream.” The third in the series (nos. 4, 5 & 8) received similar praise: “The freshness and spontaneity of these interpretations is unfaltering, as is the instantaneous rapport and subtle, crystal-clear tonal beauty of the pair’s playing,” wrote the reviewer in Gramophone, “which leaves me in something of a dilemma when it comes to describing a disc that shares the same qualities in such generous abundance that it’s hard to listen without smiling.”

On this new album the dramatic Seventh Sonata of 1802 is paired with the serene Tenth composed in 1812 for the great violinist Pierre Rode.

Reviews

Beethoven described both of the works on this album as sonatas for pianoforte and violin, in that order. So, given that the piano opens each movement of Op 30 No 2, it’s captivating to hear what Andrew Armstrong does with his spotlight. He has a wonderful ability to create an atmosphere in an instant, as if he’s pulling the music out of the air – a quality on display throughout his Beethoven cycle with James Ehnes ... a wonderfully positive conclusion to a life-enhancing cycle.  Richard Bratby
