This release provides a glimpse of the richness represented by the music from the Baltic region in the latter half of the 17th century.
The professional careers and personal connections of the composers of the period seem to be as closely knit as the trading network of the age. One salient common feature is the strong influence of Italian music, that became crucial to the development of the music of the Baltic composers. Buxtehude marks the culmination of this development, and his strong influence on the composers of the succeeding generation places him as a key figure in the history of Protestant church music music.
Jakob Bloch Jespersen, who is a part of Paul Hillier’s Theatre of Voices, has released numerous albums with Baroque music, including Heinrich Schütz’s four passions, Buxtehude’s vocal music and psalms by Thomas Kingo and H.A. Brorson.
Concerto Copenhagen is Scandinavia’s leading Baroque Orchestra, joining the league of the world’s most exciting and innovative Baroque orchestras.
