About

The Anatomy of Melancholy, the debut project of violinist Emily Stewart, is based on the eponymous work of the writer Robert Burton from 1621. Burton’s work is about the idea that human existence and our perception are characterized primarily by melancholy; this motive is examined on physical, mental and philosophical aspects. Similar to the book, Stewart’s music programme is a collection of miniatures conceptually linked by the common theme of melancholy. She draws inspiration from the abundance of her own, eclectic background: sounds from classical music, the Great American Songbook, Celtic folk music, and free improvisation come together here. More than a purely musical performance, The Anatomy of Melancholy enables the listener to enter a world full of longing and memory.
