John BarbirolliAbout
This stunning collection features 17 works appearing on CD for the first time on Sony Classical, remastered from the original analogue discs and tapes using 24-bit/192kHz technology.
From 1938 until 1943, when he returned to the UK to take over Manchester’s Hallé Orchestra, Sir John made a series of recordings in New York for American Columbia and RCA Victor which are still essential for a full appreciation of this revered conductor’s career, “performances that are as competitive today as they were when initially released” (Fanfare). Sony Classical is delighted to reissue them in a newly remastered 6-CD set.
Included in this box set are collaborations will many revered musicians including violinists Nathan Milstein and Mishel Piastro, cellist Joseph Schuster, clarinettist Benny Goodman and pianist Robert Casadesus.
Among the treasures in this collection are Debussy’s Ibéria and Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini and the first-ever recording of Schubert’s Fourth (“Tragic”) Symphony. Also included are breathtaking performances of works by Schubert, Smetana, Brahms, Sibelius, JS Bach and Purcell.
