This disc features several of Tchaikovsky’s major orchestral works, including movements from the Fourth and Fifth Symphonies, the Overture Romeo and Juliet and the Nutcracker Suite, in virtuoso transcriptions for solo organ by Edwin Lemare and Vaughn himself.
Jonathan Vaughn is a former organ scholar of St John’s College, Cambridge, and was assistant organist at Wells Cathedral for almost ten years before moving to the USA where he is now Associate Director of Music at Christ Church, Greenwich, CT.
This second solo recording from Jonathan Vaughn demonstrates further his supreme virtuosity in powerfully dramatic repertoire, as well as the immense range of tone colour of the Redcliffe organ, and will capture the imagination of all lovers of Tchaikovsky’s music.
The 1911 Harrison and Harrison organ of St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol is regarded as one of the finest high Romantic organs ever built, and as such is an excellent instrument for these performances. It has one of the widest dynamic ranges of any church organ and we have attempted to preserve that breadth of dynamic from almost inaudible whispers to climaxes of earth-shattering power in this recording.
Critical comment on Wagner at the Organ (REGCD394):
‘…loads of colour and dynamic range.... Vaughn’s command of the swell pedal and the different combinations at his disposal is especially effective...’ – BBC Radio 3 CD review
‘The right word for this CD, I think, is “rousing”’ – The Times
‘Wow! ... Incredible!...If you like Wagner. If you like the sound of the pipe organ. Heck, if you have a beating heart, you have to hear this.’ – Classical Music Sentinel
‘... this is a strong recording of a talented organist and a fine instrument.’ – American Record Guide
