About

Born in Catalonia, Spain, Pablo Casals (1876-1973) is generally regarded as the pre-eminent cellist of the first half of the 20th century, and one of the greatest cellists of all time. He made many recordings throughout his career, of solo, chamber, and orchestral music, and as a conductor. However, he is perhaps best remembered for the recordings of the Bach Cello Suites he cut from 1936 to 1939. This CD presents his 1952 recording of Franz Schubert’s magnificent Quintet in C major, op.163, D956. The Quintet would mark Schubert’s last completed work. In mid-October of 1828 – just a few weeks after having completed the Quintet – his sickness worsened considerably. Schubert died at three o’clock in the afternoon on 19 November 1828, at the age of 31. A recording of Robert Schumann’s Piano Trio in D minor, op.63, made by Casals around the same time, has been added here as a bonus.

Includes 16-page booklet containing rare photos, original artwork, and new as well as the original LP liner notes; 24-bit digitally remastered
