About

For her project “In 27 Pieces: the Hilary Hahn Encores”, Hilary Hahn commissioned no fewer than 26 international composers to write new encores for violin and piano.

For the 27th encore she ran an innovative online competition through her website which had inspired an incredible 400 entries! Hilary had gone through every single one herself and chose Hawaiian-based composer Jeff Myers to be the winner for his encore Angry Birds of Kauai.

The recording features the acclaimed Cory Smythe on piano.

The album is a roll-call of contemporary composers including Nico Muhly, Jennifer Higdon, James Newton Howard, Max Richter, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Lera Auerbach, Elliott Sharp, Mason Bates, Valentin Silvestrov, Mark Anthony Turnage, David Lang, Du Yun, Franghiz Ali-Zadeh.

An essential album for Hilary Hahn’s devoted fans and everyone interested in the regeneration of the violin repertoire.

“I believe that the point of an encore is to create a little world of its own in a very short time, and that’s what all these pieces do.” - Hilary Hahn in The Times

“If only every instrumentalist did projects like this.” - The New York Times

“Hahn was already a well-established virtuoso. This project marks her evolution as something far more interesting: a creative force.” - The Boston Globe

“Hahn, guided only by her inquisitive ear, has spanned a dizzyingly wide range of styles, from the luminous avant-gardism of Richard Barrett to the autumnal neo-Romanticism of David Del Tredici and the post-minimalist bustle of David Lang.” - The New Yorker
