American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was among the first conductors born and educated in the United States of America to receive worldwide acclaim. His fame derived from his long tenure as the music director of the New York Philharmonic, from his conducting of concerts with most of the world’s leading orchestras, and from his music for West Side Story, Peter Pan, Candide, Wonderful Town, On the Town, On the Waterfront, and his own Mass. This release contains Bernstein’s complete iconic LP (Columbia Masterworks – ML 5144) presenting recordings of his own Serenade for Violin, Strings, Harp & Percussion, which features the great Isaac Stern as the main soloist. Bernstein’s first version of his Symphony No.2 for piano and orchestra, titled The Age of Anxiety, as well as a selection of pieces from his ballet Fancy Free have been added as a bonus.
