About

This final L’Oiseau-Lyre set presents some of the most significant Medieval & Renaissance albums recorded by one of the most authoritative Early Music labels. Ranging from anonymous 13th-century hymns to Dowland’s Lachrimae, the works explored in this 50-CD collection effectively represent the dawn of Western Music Tradition.

Included are 6 albums new to CD, plus a 200-page booklet featuring historical overviews of the recorded works and a history of the label

L’Oiseau-Lyre is one of the pillars of Decca’s label history. Originally founded as a publishing venture called Editions de L’Oiseau-Lyre in Paris in 1932, the recording side was acquired by Decca in 1970. The label came to represent the highest standard in original instrument performance, based on the most recent research into the original texts, instrumentation and performing styles.

For many music lovers and record collectors L’Oiseau-Lyre immediately brings to mind iconic images of record sleeves with a white background and a painting which is usually contemporaneous with the music being performed (on authentic instruments or modern copies).

Reviews

This richly rewarding collection brings together music across the centuries, from plainsong and the Carmina Burana to the late Renaissance, touching the early baroque of Monteverdi. It is also a celebration of a period of wonderful creativity in the British early music scene around the 1980s. ... Both a treasure trove and a great historical document.  Nicholas Kenyon
