Europadisc Review
This first volume appropriately includes some of Fauré’s earliest mélodies, starting with the pair of Opus 1 songs: the charming ‘Le Papillon et la fleur' and the more reflective ‘Mai', both winningly sung by Ann Murray. John Chest’s light baritone brings a ideally suitably timbre to the Opus 2 settings, ‘Dans les ruines d’une abbaye' and ‘Les Matelots', while Nigel Cliffe’s more darkly-hued baritone is well suited to the lamenting ‘Chanson du pêcheur', op.4 no.1 (its text by Théophile Gautier previously set by Berlioz as ‘Sur les lagunes' in Les Nuits d’été). Countertenor Iestyn Davies two memorably limpid contributions, in ‘Lydia’, op.4 no.2, and ‘Tristesse', op.6 no.2, are among the disc’s highlights, while tenor Ben Johnson takes two more impassioned works, ‘Sérénade toscane', op.3 no.2, and ‘Nell’, op.18 no.1. As with soprano Janis Kelly, who sings the first two op.39 songs, ‘Aurore’ and ‘Fleur jetée', as well as the sparkling ‘La Fée aux chansons’, op.27 no.2, we must hope for more material from them in later releases.
The brilliant contrasts of the three-song cycle Poème d’un jour, op.21 (1878) are perfectly captured by John Chest and Malcolm Martineau in ideal partnership, but the lion’s share of this first disc falls to Ann Murray and soprano Joan Rodgers. Murray may be best known for her Handel, Mozart and Richard Strauss, but she constantly proves her worth in the mélodie repertoire, not least in the celebrated ‘Après un rêve', op.7 no.1, and the Cinq Mélodies ‘de Venise’, op.58, which receive uncommonly vivid performances here, every bit worthy of comparison with the greatest recordings of the past. Meanwhile, Rodgers takes complete ownership of the great late cycle Le Jardin clos, op.106 (1914): her crystal-clear tone and quick vibrato seem to evoke another era, and they perfectly complement the restraint and simplicity of the piano parts, providing a welcome taster of further riches to come.
Fauré famously scorned empty virtuosity from pianists, and Martineau’s accompaniments throughout this first disc are models of quiet tastefulness, deft and nimble where needs be, but always subtle and finely nuanced. If these standards continue to be met in later releases, this will be a cycle to cherish. There are excellent, detailed notes from French music expert Roger Nichols, and full texts with English translations, all beautifully presented. With a generous timing of over 76 minutes which manages to include two of the recently discovered Vocalises, this is a disc to snap up without a moment’s hesitation.
