About
Between 1974 and 1996 Pinchas Zukerman recorded 22 albums for DG and Philips (three for Decca), mainly as solo violinist but also as solo violist and as conductor, working closely with both the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He teamed up with some of the greatest artists of his time, including Daniel Barenboim, Itzhak Perlman, Midori, Hermann Baumann and Michala Petri.
It began in 1974 with a classic recording of Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending with Daniel Barenboim and the English Chamber Orchestra. Over the next two decades, Pinchas Zukerman released a series of albums for Deutsche Grammophon, including the great violin concertos by Beethoven, Brahms and Sibelius, benchmark recordings of Brahms’s Violin and Viola Sonatas, Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, iconic Mozart with Itzhak Perlman, and a star-studded Four Seasons with Stern, Mintz and Perlman. In 1986 Zukerman recorded the searching Through Roses, a new composition by his long-time piano-partner Marc Neikrug.
For Philips he recorded an equally attractive number of albums, including the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (coupled with the Octet). He teamed up with Midori in Bach, with horn player Hermann Baumann for the Mozart Horn Concertos, and with recorder player Michala Petri in a Telemann programme. In addition, there are two anthologies of popular and light pieces.
For Decca, Zukerman set down a 2-CD set of Schubert Piano Trios with Vladimir Ashkenazy and Lynn Harrell, and, as violist, Berlioz’s Harold in Italy with Montréal under Dutoit.
This box brings together for the first time the wide variety of Zukerman’s recordings on DG and Philips.
