This programme represents a complete survey of Haydn’s operatic overtures, including rarities such as excerpts from the marionette opera, Philemon und Baucis. These overtures have rarely been recorded, with the BIS label’s double CD release of Haydn’s entire orchestral overtures with the Haydn Sinfonietta Wien currently being the only alternative.
The Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Pardubice is one of the Czech Republic’s leading orchestras. Its recordings for Naxos include two volumes of symphonies by Franz Beck, of which ClassicsToday.com wrote that “this release will give a great deal of pleasure to anyone interested in the best symphonic works of the early classical period,” giving vol.1 (8573248) a score of 9/9.
