There have been many recordings of Herbert Howells' choral works but not a series of his complete anthems. Priory aims to achieve this with a collection to be sung by the Lincoln Cathedral Choir.
Herbert Howells is rooted in the English Cathedral tradition to which he has contributed so many services and anthems, and his is a unique and instantly recognisable idiom rich in intricate and harmonically complex counterpoint - in long, interweaving and mellifluous vocal lines all contributing to a response to the texts that he set that can be both austere and sensual.
