At the age of 85, Elliott Carter embarked on composing a grand tripartite symphony, which today counts among his undisputed masterworks. In the present recording this 'Symphonia: Sum Fluxae Pretium Spei' (1993–96) is interpreted by one of the world’s finest orchestras: the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, conducted by Emilio Pomàrico. Carter’s music is marked by the constructive tendencies of European modernity as well as the great originality so typical for American composers.
Very appropriately the CD program is completed by an outstanding concert overture which is extremely rich in contrast, composed by the great maverick Charles Ives. During his high school times Carter, who in 2013 passed away at the unbelievable age of nearly 104, received considerable encouragement by Ives.
