Margaret Phillips (organ)About
In this supplementary volume to Margaret Philips’ critically-acclaimed recording of J S Bach’s organ works will be found pieces which for a variety of reasons were not included in the original set of 16 CDs recorded between 2005 and 2009.
There are alternative versions of pieces that are found in the main corpus and/or may not have been arranged by Bach (BWV545b, BWV584 and BWV653b), others may not be intended for the organ (BWV917 and the two Ricercars from the Musical Offering), and some are almost certainly not by Bach. The latter applies particularly to the Eight Short Preludes & Fugues which are included as they are still widely used as teaching material. One piece (BWV1128) was yet to be rediscovered when this series of Bach recordings commenced.
Recorded on the Drapps 1997 / Flentrop 2008 organ in historic style in Sint-Niklasskerk, Sint-Niklass, Belgium.
Critical comment on the series:
‘…in terms of sheer listening pleasure, these are organ recordings par excellence…we are clearly here in the realms of a Bach series which stands proudly among the best…Some of the finest performances of Bach chorale preludes on disc.’ - International Record Review
‘Gary Cole's engineering is as ever, top-drawer, matching Margaret Phillips's superb musicianship’ - Gramophone awards issue 2011
