Jordi Maso (piano)About
Joaquín Turina loved to paint musical pictures of his immediate surroundings, and this 11th volume in Jordi Masó’s complete edition of Turina’s piano works features music inspired by various aspects of everyday life.
Verbena madrileña is a brightly coloured portrait of a feast-day in Madrid, while En la zapatería describes the shoemaker’s tasks in vignettes ranging from Wagnerian drama to balletic pirouettes. Also included are the cinema-inspired Linterna mágica and the Radio Madrid suite with its ‘broadcasts’ from different places in Spain, each miniature a brief flash of inspiration from deep within Turina’s fertile, creative spirit.
Our edition of Joaquín Turina’s piano music played by Jordi Masó has received wide acclaim over its previous volumes, with volume 10 (8.573183) seeing the Gramophone magazine admiring how “…Masó, admirably recorded, takes everything in his stride, responding effortlessly to every virtuoso and entrenched national challenge.” ClassicsToday.com summed up the value of this collection in their review of volume 6 (8.572141): “Jordi Masó has done excellent work in this ongoing series, and he’s in excellent form here. He makes everything sound natural, rhythmically pointed, and builds the climaxes without banging. Turina was, notoriously, a gentle soul who liked his music played with elegance, and Masó does just that, but without forgetting the muscle lying beneath the surface. Excellent sonics complete this wholly winning package.”
