About

Born in Catalonia, Spain, Pablo Casals (1876-1973) is generally regarded as the preeminent cellist of the first half of the 20th century, and one of the greatest cellists of all time. He made many recordings throughout his career, of solo, chamber and orchestral music, and also as conductor, but he is perhaps best remembered for the recordings of the Bach Cello Suites he made from 1936 to 1939.

On Monday, November 13th 1961, an historic event occurred in the East Room of the White House in Washington, when Casals played a concert in honour of the President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, assisted by violinist Alexander Schneider and pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski.

The whole evening program was originally issued on LP as 'A Concert at the White House' (Columbia KL-5726), and is reissued in its entirety on this CD.

A performance of Joseph Haydn’s popular 'Gypsy Rondo' Trio in G Major, recorded during Casals’ early glory years by the iconic group with Jacques Thibaut on violin and Alfred Cortot on piano, has been added here as a bonus.
