About
This is the third release in a series of Toccata Classics recordings of orchestral music by the Hungarian composer Ferenc Farkas (1905–2000). This volume features works for oboe and strings, the solo instrument played by the legendary Hungarian oboist Lajos Lencsés.
The recording highlights the characteristics that make his music so appealing: catchy tunes, transparent scoring, buoyant rhythms and a fondness for Baroque forms and folk-dances. Two chamber pieces featuring the oboe and cor anglais offer textural contrast.
The two previous albums in this series have been warmly welcomed in the musical press.
Lajos Lencsés is one of the world’s finest oboists. His broad repertoire embraces composers as disparate as Bach, Bellini, Britten, Cimarosa, Dittersdorf, Dutilleux, Françaix, Handel, Ibert, d’Indy, Jolivet, Koechlin, Martinů, Mozart, Nielsen, Poulenc, Franz Xaver Richter, Rosetti, Strauss and Vivaldi, and he naturally championed contemporary Hungarian composers such as Sándor Balassa, Frigyes Hidas and Joszef Soproni. Over the past three decades he has made more than fifty recordings, many of which have been awarded prizes. In 2003 the Republic of Hungary honoured him in 2003 as a Knight of the Order of Merit.
