With this box set DG celebrate classical music’s most talked-about artist of the 1980s. After the 22-year-old Yugoslav pianist didn’t win the Warsaw Chopin Competition in 1980, the international press became obsessed with him, his every action a cause for comment.
A bęte noire of critics, whom he treated alternately with open friendliness or barely concealed contempt, he was the darling of his huge public, receiving pop-star adulation at his sold-out concerts and selling hundreds of thousands of records (300 LPs and MCs in a quarter of an hour at the record signing after his Paris début).
Amid all of this, the media-savvy “Pogo” played his part to a T, with his aristocratic mien, outrageous costumes, extravagant lifestyle and controversial comments. The box set reminds us afresh of the extent of his prodigious talent – think only of his Ravel or Scarlatti or Bach – and the musical reasons for his extraordinary success.
‘’First, technical perfection as something natural. Second, an insight into the development of the piano sound, as perfected by the pianist-composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, composers who understood the piano both as a human voice ... and as an orchestra with which they could produce a variety of colors. Third, the need to learn how to use every aspect of our new instruments, which are richer in sound. Fourth, the importance of differentiation.’’ - Ivo Pogorelich about the most important things Aliza Kezeradze taught him.
“What matters is not what he can do, for this is only the beginning. What matters is how many ideas occur to him and how much he can demand of the music and of himself. In short, he is an artist who must be taken seriously, a hugely talented pianist who radiates an extraordinary fascination. In a word, he is exciting.” – JOACHIM KAISER
“I am the most written-about pianist in the world. I get a review when I dust my piano” – IVO POGORELICH
