Johan Wagenaar is one of the founding fathers of the rebirth of music culture in the Netherlands. In an article Wagenaar himself enumerated the musical qualities that he regarded as typically Dutch: “Tending toward simple, almost folk-style melodic formation, inclined to heartiness, and evocative of warmth, contentment and native mirth”.
This second volume of Symphonic works continues to demonstrate Wagenaar’s orchestral works, balancing formal structure with rich melodic invention.
This interpretation is led by the successful young conductor Antony Hermus.
‘First rate recording and splendid playing… A welcome disc of music by a composer almost totally forgotten, at least outside Holland’ - Gramophone Magazine, May 2010 (on Volume 1)
