Antonio Pappano, the world’s greatest active opera conductor, together with Italy’s premier symphony orchestra, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, bring us this astounding collection of the very best of Rossini’s opera overtures, recorded in concert and in the studio at their home venue, the Sala Santa Cecilia, Auditorium Parco della Musica, Rome.
“Since I started conducting the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia I have never ceased to be amazed by the 'direct line' it seems to have to Rossini's music. The articulation, humour, drama and verve they display gives me such joy that I am thrilled that this album has become a reality after our other more 'serious' Rossini outings for CD. A special thank you to our wind soloists for showing us another side of Rossini's glittering instrumental genius.” – Antonio Pappano

Europadisc Review
In a short personal note to this new disc, Pappano says of his orchestra that 'I have never ceased to be amazed by the "direct line" it seems to have to Rossini's music.' That sense of authenticity, the 'articulation, humour(!), drama and verve the musicians display' is evident throughout these performances.
With the overtures ordered chronologically, starting with the overture to La scala di seta (1812), the disc is a joy from start to finish. From the sparklingly alert strings at the opening, it's evident that these performances will be very special, but it's the following slow woodwind section that highlights the orchestra's strongest suit, for the wind playing is exceptionally fine. This is as it should be, with Rossini taking up matters where Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven left off in using the wind section to give his music real character and bite. At the same time, the strings are as nimble and earthy as one could wish, and there's a splendid rhythmic buoyancy that energises every Rossini crescendo.
In the short overture to Il signor Bruschino there are some delightful col legno tapping effects, while The Barber of Seville (which prefaced two earlier Rossini operas before finding its more familiar home) mixes drama and humour in ideal measure, with some splendidly characterful percussion (there's nothing quite like a really good Italian bass drum thwack!). Even in the louder passages, Pappano keeps articulation light and sprightly, and the same is true even in the more lyrical La Cenerentola (another recycled overture), with some gorgeous clarinet and piccolo solos.
With Semiramide, The Siege of Corinth and William Tell, Rossini expanded the scope of the overture from short curtain-raiser to something altogether grander and more dramatic, and Pappano and his players rise to the challenge with playing of real poise, sweep and theatrical grandeur. The William Tell overture (1829), effectively a four-movement tone poem, sounds newly-minted in Pappano's hand, from the lovingly shaped opening cello quintet to a rollicking account of the famous concluding galop.
Some might regret the omission of familiar favourites like The Italian Girl in Algiers and The Thieving Magpie (saved for a future companion disc, perhaps?). But the inclusion of the Andante and Theme with Variations of 1812 for flute, clarinet, bassoon and horn silences all criticism. It's a delightful way of finishing a marvellous disc, allowing members of the orchestra's exceptional wind section to display their virtuoso chamber-music skills in music of tremendous warmth and wit.
Bravo tutti quanti!
