“Simon Carrington draws lovely, beautifully balanced, and technically assured singing from his accomplished musicians.” - American Record Guide
Such critical praise and more were lavished upon 'Anniversaries and Messages' (DE3436), the first Delos album by English “Choral magician” Simon Carrington and the Yale Schola Cantorum that he founded in 2003.
Now a Yale Professor Emeritus, Carrington has continued to work with the choir as a guest conductor. This and his previous Delos album – both recorded in concert – are the luscious fruits of his continuing association with the choir that he developed into one of America’s premier academic chamber choirs.
The program features mesmerizing sacred music spanning the entire English Renaissance, by John Taverner, Thomas Tallis and Orlando Gibbons. The album’s centrepiece is The Glory and the Dream, a substantial and moving choral cycle setting Wordsworth’s poetry by the late, lamented Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, to whose memory the album is dedicated.
