About

Frenchman Erik Satie was one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. His music has inspired composers and musicians as diverse as John Cage, Frank Zappa and Gary Numan.

This 4-CD set includes all of the works that have made his music popular in recent years, including the haunting piano pieces ‘Trois Gymnopédies’ which are regularly heard on the soundtracks to other mediums, including television and the movies.

Apart from the Gymnopédies, this 4-CD set of the music of Eric Satie includes piano pieces such as the Gnossiennes, Ogives and Sarabandes as well as orchestral music like the well-known ballet music to ‘Parade’.

Arrangements of Satie’s piano pieces made for symphony or chamber orchestra, choir, guitar, flute and dulcimer round off this portrait of the composer.

The recordings were made between 1937 and 1996. The collection also features his friend and contemporary Francis Poulenc, as well as legendary performers like Leopold Stokowski, Igor Markevich, the Czech Chamber Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Besides Poulenc, the other pianists performing here are Ronan O’Hara and Jan Kaspersen.
