Darius Milhaud

About

Darius Milhaud, who died 40 years ago at the age of 82, was one of the most prominent and engaging French composers of the 20th century. This 10 CD box set at budget price offers a voyage of discovery around his prolific and varied output of orchestral, instrumental and vocal music.

His two best-known works are Le Bœuf sur le toit, with its irresistible Latin dance rhythms, and La Création du monde, a ballet score which made pioneering use of jazz elements. Both highly influential, they grew from his experiences as a young man in Brazil and the US respectively.

Like his contemporary Francis Poulenc, he was a member of Les Six, the group of composers that typifies the musical world of 1920s Paris, but he was a more adventurous and cosmopolitan figure. His music – a catalogue of more than 450 works – reflects his life and times, integrating diverse cultural and musical elements. It is also boldly modern in its frequent use of bitonality and polytonality – yet it never becomes intractable, remaining approachable and life-enhancing.

This anthology provides an opportunity to explore his huge and diverse canon of works – much of which remains surprisingly little known.

Darius Milhaud was born to a Jewish family long established in Aix-en-Provence. He studied in Paris with Paul Dukas and Vincent d’Indy and spent formative periods working in Brazil and touring the USA. In 1940, having fled France after the German invasion, he became a professor at Mills College in California – where his students included jazz musician Dave Brubeck and songwriter Burt Bacharach – and subsequently also took up a post at the Paris Conservatoire. It is significant that, when he wrote his biography, he chose to call it 'Ma vie heureuse' (My happy life).

In his complete catalogue of some 450 works, there are 12 symphonies, 15 operas, 26 film scores, 39 choral works and dozens of chamber and instrumental works. Beyond Le Bœuf sur le toit and La Création du Monde, his most popular works are probably Saudades do Brasil and Suite provençale, both for orchestra, and the vaudevillesque suite for two pianos, Scaramouche.

This set draws on Warner Classics’ magnificent treasury of recordings to present a variety of Milhaud’s orchestral, operatic, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. They are interpreted by an assembly of distinguished – sometimes legendary – performers who span the 20th and 21st centuries and a range of performing traditions. In addition to a peerless array of French musicians – including Milhaud himself and a number of his famous contemporaries – there are major figures from the USA, Germany and Russia.

Le Bœuf sur le toit and La Création du Monde are heard in performances conducted by both Milhaud himself and by Leonard Bernstein. Milhaud can also be heard playing piano in Scaramouche with Marcelle Meyer (in the words of Gramophone magazine, "a real corker of a performance").

Other performers include: the conductor Sergiu Celibidache; the pianists Jacques Février, Yvonne Loriod, Michel Béroff, Jean-Philippe Collard and Alexandre Tharaud; the instrumentalists Mstislav Rostropovich, Jeanne Loriod, Emmanuel Pahud and Frank Peter Zimmermann, and the singers Jane Bathori (who premiered works by many French composers, including Milhaud), Janine Micheau (who sang in the premiere of Milhaud’s opera Médée), Dawn Upshaw (who recorded an album in tribute to Bathori), Natalie Dessay, Brigitte Fassbaender and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
