Volume four of the Piano Music series traces Raff from youth to maturity.
Douze Romances en forme d’études, Op.8 was written when he was just 21 and unsure whether to commit himself to fulltime composition. Mendelssohn was so impressed by the set of charming character pieces that he recommended them to his own publisher.
The much later 1871 La Cicerenella – Nouveau Carnaval, Op.165 is a set of virtuoso variations, whilst the Two Pieces, Op.166 offer both charm and melodic distinction.
British-Vietnamese pianist Tra Nguyen gave her first performance at the Hanoi Opera House when she was ten and has continued to engage audiences in other important venues worldwide. She studied with Lev Naumov at the Moscow Conservatory and with Christopher Elton at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
“Tra Nguyen shows what an original and brilliant voice Raff’s is” – The Independent
"...graceful salon style spun off with delightful ease by Nguyen, whose playing throughout...is as warm, fluent and sympathetic as you could wish" - Gramophone (Raff Vol.3)
"Tra Nguyen brings a beautiful sonority and a firm technicity" - Diapason 4 stars (Raff Vol.3)
