On 13th February 1945, Dresden was destroyed by allied bombers. Tens of thousands of people perished in the fire storm and irreplaceable artistic and cultural treasures were lost forever. Against the background of that tragedy, Rudolf Mauersberger (1889-1971) composed his Requiem.
Written in 1947/48, and several times revised and augmented, in its liturgical character it is (in the words of Mauersberger) an 'Evangelical Mass for the dead, such as the Protestant Church does not yet possess'.
