About

Marina Rebeka, whose “ravishing” singing in Rossini’s Petite messe solonelle graced the recently released recording conducted by Antonio Pappano, has now recorded her first operatic recital for Warner Classics. It features the young Latvian soprano as Donna Anna and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), the Countess (Le nozze di Figaro), Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Elettra (Idomeneo), and Queen of the Night and Pamina (Die Zauberflöte). Supporting her is the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Speranza Scappucci.

Donna Anna has been a signature role for Marina, who made her debuts at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Wiener Staatsoper and the Opernhaus Zurich in the role. Following her Met debut in 2012, Anthony Tommasini wrote in The New York Times, “The striking Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka was a winning Donna Anna, singing with a clear, bright sound and cool intensity.” Of her Deutsche Oper Berlin debut the Berliner Zeitung wrote, “ “Marina Rebeka as Donna Anna, as it should be, is the expressive heart of this musically intimate and high-class performance. She has what it takes to be a hit with the audience” and theaterkritiken-berlin wrote, “Bewitchingly beautiful with her clear, agile coloratura, Marina Rebeka charmed as Donna Anna“.

Marina Rebeka was born in Riga, where she began her musical studies. She attended the Internationale Sommerakademie Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg and the Accademia Rossiniana in Pesaro and graduated in 2007 from the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome, winning vocal prizes along the way in Italy and Germany. Her international breakthrough came at the 2009 Salzburg Festival, when she sang Anaï in a new production of Rossini’s Moïse et Pharaon under the baton of Riccardo Muti.

In the ensuing four years Marina Rebeka’s career has skyrocketed and she has become a sought-after artist at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala, Milan, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Rossini Opera Festival, Pesaro and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
