L’Etranger is a little masterpiece, with the composer’s remarkably rich and elegant orchestration arousing the enthusiasm and admiration of Debussy. Vincent D’Indy wrote the libretto himself to tell the story of a kindly outsider – the Etranger (foreigner) - living in a small fishing village, feared by the inhabitants who believe he has supernatural powers.
This production dates from 2010 – the present recording is a world premiere – and constitutes a major element in rediscovering the music of Vincent D’Indy and French music at the turn of the 20th century.
