About
One of the most eminent cellists of the 20th century, Pierre Fournier was known for his exceptional musicianship and, since his death in 1986, is still revered for his warm, vocal tone and the subtlety and elegance of his playing.
This 10-CD compilation of the Frenchman’s 1939-1959 recordings includes several rarities, in addition to gems by the likes of Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák and Saint-Saëns.
Alongside the Complete Works for Cello and Piano by Ludwig van Beethoven, this set features cello concertos by Dvořák, Schumann, Saint-Saëns and Haydn, the Double Concerto by Brahms, Tchaikovsky’s popular Variations on a Rococo Theme, arrangements of works by Couperin, Vivaldi and Boccherini, and chamber music by Schubert, Chopin, Bach, Rimsky-Korsakov, Fauré and Ravel.
Amongst other leading artists of the period that appear in these recordings are Friedrich Gulda, David Oistrakh, Gerald Moore, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Rafael Kubelík, Walter Susskind, Alceo Galliera and Karl Münchinger.
