About

Paavo Berglund was born on 14th April 1929 in Helsinki and died there on 25th January 2012. He was principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra from 1972 to 1979 and came to be recognised as a father-figure in modern Sibelius conducting; he also prepared a performing edition of Sibelius' Kullervo Symphony.

Whilst in Britain in 1965 he took part in the Sibelius Centenary festivities with the Bournemouth Orchestra and seven years later he resigned his posts in Helsinki to take up the appointment in Bournemouth.

During his years in Bournemouth, besides much music of his homeland and Scandinavia in general, he was able to demonstrate his prowess in Russian music, particularly Shostakovich, and flair for British music including Vaughan Williams and Bliss. In the latter years of his time in Bournemouth he was also principal conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic and it was with them that he made his second set of Sibelius Symphony recordings. After his time in Bournemouth he conducted all the major British orchestras as well as the Berlin Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Staatskapelle Dresden and the New York Philharmonic and Cleveland Orchestras.

Both of his two sets of recordings of the Sibelius Symphonies are already available - this collection brings together all his other solo-orchestral recordings.
