Philip Scriven (organ)About
Following the success of 'Piping Hot' (REGCD210), Philip Scriven’s first solo disc from Lichfield Cathedral back in 2004, Philip now presents 'Piping Blues' – demonstrating Lichfield Cathedral organ’s ‘alter ego’ with a programme of jazz and blues inspired music on this immensely versatile instrument.
Showcasing a brilliant fusion of jazz and blues techniques with pieces written in classical forms, all except one of the works were originally written for the traditional pipe organ.
The disc opens with Philip Scriven’s own virtuoso transcription of Leonard Bernstein’s jazz overture Candide and concludes with the first complete recording of Iain Farrington’s riotous dance suite Fiesta.
Hear an English cathedral organ – and organist - as you’ve never heard them before!
Philip Scriven was Organ Scholar at both St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, and St John’s College, Cambridge. He subsequently studied conducting at the Vienna Musikhochschule, and at the Juilliard School in New York. He has worked for English National Opera and Welsh National Opera, and was Assistant Conductor for Glyndebourne Festival Opera. After a year as Acting Sub-Organist at Westminster Abbey, he became Assistant Director of Music at Winchester Cathedral and, in 2002, Philip was appointed Organist and Director of Music at Lichfield Cathedral. He recorded a number of solo CDs on the Lichfield organ, and with the Cathedral Choir.
In 2010, Philip moved to Cranleigh School to become its first ‘Organist in Residence’, where he presides over the brand new Mander organ (featured on Sounds of Cranleigh, REGCD398), and is also accompanist for The Bach Choir.
